The Mamiya ZE-X, released in 1981, was a forward-thinking 35mm SLR that showcased Mamiya’s innovation just before their full shift to medium format. Featuring a proprietary Z-mount and one of the earliest forms of lens-to-body electronic communication, it allowed the camera to read lens data for advanced exposure modes like shutter priority, aperture priority, and a unique “Crossover” mode that blended both. Compact and lightweight at just over a pound, the ZE-X remains a cult favorite for its sleek design and futuristic thinking.
